Yoga Nidra
What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practice that can guide the practitioner to a deep experience of relaxation. It takes us to a place where our natural body intelligence and restful state can support us in releasing tension, stress and activating recovery responses.
It invites us to go beyond relaxation to cultivate a state of peace that can feel deeply restorative and supportive.
When we are practicing Yoga Nidra we move into a state that is not fully asleep or awake, allowing us to enjoy a very special state of awareness that can have very beneficial effects. Yoga Nidra translates as “Yogic Sleep”.
A brief history of Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra, or “yogic sleep” has deep roots in India, with references in the ancient texts of the Upanishads and Mahabharata (sacred and epic texts from ancient India) around the first millennium BC. In these texts, Yoga Nidra was used to describe Vishnu’s transcendental sleep (Vishnu is one of the main deities in Indian spirituality). It also described a state called samadhi which is an experience of complete calm and awareness.
The modern practice of Yoga Nidra was developed in the 1960s by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, the founder of the Bihar Yoga School. He adapted the ancient practices and combined them with Western relaxation elements to create an accessible method that induces a state of deep relaxation while remaining awake.
Since it became popular, its practice has extended worldwide, including modern therapeutic approaches like the iRest system developed by Dr Richard Miller, designed to treat trauma and adapt this ancient technique to modern clinical contexts.
